Coconut Oil vs. Flaxseed Oil for Dogs6 min read

Why Give Oil to Your Dog?

Oil provides your dog with healthy fats that can offer your dog extra energy. Healthy oils improve your dog’s health at a cellular level. By improving the dog’s cells, nerves, and muscles you will notice a significant improvement in your dog’s energy levels and overall health. Healthy fats improve the absorption of nutrients and vitamins like vitamin A, K, E, and D.

Fatty oils are important to every diet. Fatty acids are found in fatty oils. These fatty acids are not generated by the body, so they should be added to the diet. These fatty acids are known as omega-3s and omega-6s. Ensuring that the oil you offer your dog is of proper quality and quantity is essential, as low quality products can cause my damage than benefits to your furry friend. Fats are highly digestible. In fact, fats are one of the first components digested by the body. This makes healthty fats a good foundation to every healthy meal.

How Much Oil Should I Give my Dog?

Giving your dog too much of anything, good or bad, can lead to painful consequences; some including instigating pancreatis, diarrhea, or a vitamin deficiency. It is important to keep a close watch on your dog when you change anything in their diet, including the addition of new supplements or spices.

Flaxseed Oil

Begin, by giving your dog a very small flaxseed oil dosage. This will help you to determine whether it’s a good fit for your dog.  If your dog reacts well to the oil, gradually increase the dosage.
An optimal dose is 1 teaspoon for small dogs, 2 teaspoons for medium dogs, and 1 tablespoon for large dogs each day.

Coconut Oil

Begin giving your dog about a quarter of a teaspoon of the coconut oil for small dogs and puppies, and a teaspoon for large dogs. If your dog reacts well to the oil, gradually increase the dosage. An optimal dose of 1 teaspoon for every 10 pounds of weight is ideal.

Flaxseeds in a Bowl

What is Flaxseed Oil?

Flaxseed oil is an oil extracted from ripened flax plant seeds. Unless refrigerated, it can go bad quickly so it is best to make room for it in the fridge. Compared to other vegetable oils, flaxseed has one of the highest amounts of omega-3s. Up to 63 percent of flaxseed oil is composed of omega-3s. The fatty acid containing these omega-3s is known as Alpha-linolenic acid. Alpha-linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid. Fatty acids like Alpha-linolenic acid are not produced by the human body, but the body needs them to be healthy.

Coconuts on the Beach

What is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is an oil that comes from the kernel and meat of coconuts. Whether you like the taste of coconut or not, coconut oil can benefit both you and your dog when taken internally and applied topically. Coconut oil is slow to oxidize making it an oil that lasts for extended periods of time without going bad. Coconut oil is composed of Lauric Saturated C12 Fatty Acids. Lauric acid is linked to a boost of “good” cholesterol in the body. Coconut oil has one of the highest amounts of saturated fat contents, making coconut oil primarily solid at room temperature, and liquid as it warms.

Why Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is a unique superfood. Extra virgin coconut oil is best for dogs because it offers a variety of healthy saturated fats. These fats improve your dog’s skin, digestion, energy levels, and breath. Coconut oil is prone to stability. This oil does not need refrigeration for extended periods of time. It very rarely turns rancid making it a good long-term purchase. Ultimately, coconut oil helps overweight dogs to lose weight, by boosting the energy levels of the dog. Protect your dog from heart disease by incorporating coconut oil into their diet.
